Welcoming Week 2021

Welcoming Week: Belonging Starts with Us

Welcoming Week elevates the growing movement of communities that fully embrace new Americans and their contributions to the social fabric of our country. It’s a chance for neighbors — both immigrants and U.S.-born residents — to get to know one another and celebrate what unites us as a community.

We are hosting events throughout York and Lancaster Counties during the week so there are many ways to get engaged! Events range from panels of diverse faith leaders, naturalization ceremonies, ethnic festivals, tours of immigrant-owned businesses, and multi-cultural concerts.

See below for info on what we’re doing in 2021!

York Events

Friday Sept 10th – 6:00pm 2nd Latino Friday at the Strand Capital Performing Arts Center/Appell Center in York. Celebration of Latino communities of York through music, food, and dance.

Sept 11th – 2:00 pm the Martin Library will be hosting a virtual Refugee Simulation program. The program is based on the tabletop game Dungeons & Dragons. We have created a version of this game based on Omar Mohamed’s graphic novel When Stars Are Scattered. In this program, teens will role-play as refugees through a series of events intended to depict real-life experiences of refugees in camps. We believe that a narrative-driven game like this will be an effective way to educate teens and get them interested in the issues and difficulties that refugees face.
