Competitive Private Lessons

Ages 12 - 18

Need stroke refinement, faster racing starts, or improvement on your flip turns? Our competitive private swim lessons help swimmers focus on their personal goals. These one-on-one swim lessons are great whether you are on the swim team or training for a triathlon.

Competitive Stroke Clinics

Ages 12 - 18

Throughout the year York YMCA Swimming offers specialized clinics and mini-camps. These sessions are open to all competitive swimmers and focus on stroke development, starts, turns, and the mental aspects of improving performance.

High School Prep Swimming

Ages 13 - 17

This program is specifically designed for high school swimmers who want to get a jump on their season. This is an opportunity to get in shape and work on improving your strokes with our experienced coaching staff. Practices are designed to focus on high school events with a large emphasis on stroke improvement as well as training sets. Participants must be in high school.

Preschool Swimming at Southern Stage 1

Ages 3 - 5

This level helps children develop safe pool behavior; adjust to the water, and develop independent movement in the water. It is designed for new swimmers, teaching basic paddle stroke and kicking skills, pool safety, and comfort with holding the face in the water while blowing bubbles and swimming.

Preschool Swimming at Southern Stage 2

Ages 3 - 5

This advanced beginner level reinforces Pike skills. It is for children who are comfortable in the water. They are taught to kick, dive, float and perform the progressive paddle stroke.

Preschool Swimming at Southern Stage 3

Ages 3 - 5

At this level children review previous skills, improve stroke skills, learn personal safety, and rescue skills, build endurance by swimming on their front and back, and learn to tread water and perform progressive diving skills.

Stroke Development

Ages 6 - 12

Students in stage 5 work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive stokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke.

Stroke Introduction

Ages 6 - 12

Students in stage 4 develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breaststroke and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke.

Swim Basics

Ages 6 - 12

Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by gaining two benchmark skills: Swim, float swim – sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll front glide, jump, push, turn grab and exit.

This class will introduce swimmers ages 5 and up, novice to expert, to the team sport of swimming. Swimming will be taught in a healthy, competitive environment with great coaching and instruction.

Water Acclimation

Ages 3 - 5

Students develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of waters in stage 1. This stage lays the foundation that allows for a student’s future progress in swimming.

Water Discovery

Ages 6 mo - 18 mo

Parents accompany children in stage A, which introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration and encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water.

In stage B, the parents work with their children to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.

Water Movement

Ages 3 - 5

In stage 2, students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.

In stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.

YMCA Competitive Swim Team

Ages 12 - 18

The York YMCA’s Competitive Swim Team is open to youth of all levels & abilities. It is the perfect program for those who love to swim but have never competed on a team It is ideally for those who enjoy competitive swimming but enjoy a low pressure, relaxed atmosphere. It is especially beneficial for high school swimmers wishing to stay in shape during the off-season. Swimmers compete in local swim meets that give them friendly competition and teach them sportsmanship and teamwork. Practice is held at two locations, the Graham Aquatic Center, located at 543 N. Newberry Street in York, and the York YMCA Southern Branch, located at 100 Constitution Ave in Shrewsbury.
